What size petrol or diesel pump do I need?

How high can it suck water?
Surface pumps can only lift water a limited height by suction. At sea level the practical limit is about 7–8 metres, and in highland areas such as Nairobi and Kiambu it is lower, so plan on about 5–6 metres. For deeper sources use a submersible pump.
How much land can it irrigate?
It depends on flow, pressure and crop. Vegetables on a dry-season day can need very roughly 20,000–30,000 litres per acre. Divide your daily need by the pump's hourly flow to see the pumping hours required.
My pump will not prime or has low flow. What should I check?
Fill the pump casing with water, check the suction hose and foot valve for air leaks, keep the suction pipe short, and clean the strainer and impeller. A worn impeller or blocked foot valve also cuts flow.
What pipe size should I use?
Use pipe at least as large as the pump inlet and outlet. For long delivery runs, go up a size to reduce friction loss.
